The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh has filed a police complaint against the husband of Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal, alleging that he had assaulted him. The First Information Report (FIR) filed at the Parliament Street police station names Bibhav Kumar, Maliwal’s husband, as the accused.
According to Singh, he was on his way to meet Maliwal at her office on September 2 when Kumar stopped him and attacked him. Singh claimed that Kumar hit him with a stick and tried to strangle him. He also alleged that Kumar threatened to kill him if he did not stop attacking Maliwal.
The incident has triggered a political row, with the AAP accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of orchestrating the attack. The party has also alleged that the Delhi Police are biased towards the BJP and are trying to shield Kumar.
Meanwhile, the BJP has denied any involvement in the incident and has accused the AAP of lying. The party has also demanded a fair investigation into the matter.
This is not the first time that Maliwal has been embroiled in controversy. In 2018, she went on a hunger strike demanding stricter laws against sexual violence in the wake of the Kathua rape case. The hunger strike drew criticism from many quarters, with some accusing Maliwal of politicizing the issue.
Maliwal has also been accused of misusing her position as the head of the DCW. In 2019, a report by the Delhi government’s internal vigilance department found irregularities in the appointment of staff at the commission. The report also accused Maliwal of exceeding her authority and violating the rules while making appointments.
Despite the controversies, Maliwal remains a popular figure among women’s rights activists in Delhi. She has been credited with initiating several measures to improve women’s safety in the city, including setting up a 181 helpline for women in distress.
The assault on Singh has once again brought the spotlight back on the contentious relationship between the AAP and the BJP in Delhi. With elections scheduled in the city next year, the incident is likely to become a major campaign issue for both parties.
