The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which was once a crusader for justice, is now supporting an accused. The party has shown support to Swati Maliwal, the chief of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), who has been booked for allegedly promoting enmity between different groups and making statements prejudicial to national integration.

This is a major shift from AAP’s stance during the Nirbhaya case in 2012, where they demanded swift justice for the victim. It is perplexing to see the same party, which was once at the forefront of women’s rights, backing someone accused of such serious charges.

The charges against Maliwal stem from a complaint filed by a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) youth wing. The complainant alleged that Maliwal had made derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which could cause communal tension. She was also accused of spreading false information about the scrapping of Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

Maliwal has denied the charges and has claimed that they are politically motivated. She has also said that she will not be deterred by such actions and will continue to fight for women’s rights.

The AAP, on the other hand, has come out in support of Maliwal. The party’s spokesperson, Saurabh Bhardwaj, has said that the charges against her are baseless and that they are an attempt to silence her voice. He also added that the BJP is afraid of Maliwal’s work and is trying to target her.

The support extended by the AAP to Maliwal has raised eyebrows as it seems to be contradicting the party’s stand on women’s issues. The party has always projected itself as the champion of women’s rights and has taken several steps to empower them. It is, therefore, surprising to see the party supporting someone accused of promoting enmity and making statements prejudicial to national integration.

The incident has also given rise to speculation that the AAP is trying to play politics with the issue. The party is currently in power in Delhi and is gearing up for the assembly elections next year. It is possible that the party is trying to win the support of a particular community by backing Maliwal.

Whatever the reason may be, the fact remains that the AAP’s support to an accused is not in line with its past record. The party should refrain from playing politics with sensitive issues and focus on its core agenda of improving governance.
