In a dramatic turn of events, Delhi Police reached the residence of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday in connection with an alleged assault on Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash. The move comes amid a bitter political feud between the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has been accusing the AAP of being anti-democratic.
The AAP government in Delhi has been in power since 2015, after winning a historic mandate in the Assembly elections. The party’s leader, Arvind Kejriwal, came to power promising to provide clean and efficient governance to the people of Delhi. However, his tenure has been marked by frequent clashes with the central government and other state agencies, which he accuses of obstructing his government’s work.
The latest controversy erupted after Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash alleged that he was assaulted by AAP MLAs during a meeting at the CM’s residence on February 19. The incident sparked widespread outrage, with the opposition parties calling for the resignation of Kejriwal and his cabinet colleagues.
The AAP, however, denied the allegations and accused the BJP of trying to destabilize its government. The party alleged that the police were acting at the behest of the BJP, which wants to dislodge the AAP from power in Delhi.
The BJP wants to end the AAP and they are using the police to do it. We will not be intimidated by their tactics and will continue to fight for the people of Delhi, Kejriwal said in a press conference on Friday.
The Delhi Police, however, denied any political motive behind their visit to the CM’s residence. We are following due process of law and investigating the case in a fair and impartial manner. We have not received any instructions from the central government or the BJP, a senior police official said.
The BJP, which has been demanding the arrest of Kejriwal and his cabinet colleagues, welcomed the police action. The law must take its course and those responsible for the assault on the Chief Secretary must be brought to justice. The AAP cannot be allowed to get away with such blatant disregard for the rule of law, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said.
The AAP, on the other hand, accused the BJP of trying to divert attention from the real issues facing the people of Delhi. The BJP is trying to create a smokescreen to hide its failures in Delhi. They have nothing to offer to the people and are resorting to cheap politics, AAP spokesperson Raghav Chadha said.
The political crisis in Delhi shows no signs of abating, with both the AAP and the BJP refusing to back down. The future of the AAP government hangs in the balance, as the party fights to clear its name and regain the trust of the people of Delhi.
