In a significant address at the G7 Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India’s commitment to voicing the concerns of the Global South on the world stage. He articulated that India, with its growing geopolitical influence and historical ties with many developing nations, is uniquely positioned to advocate for their interests. The Prime Minister’s speech was seen as a reaffirmation of India’s role as a bridge between the developing and developed worlds.

Historically, the Global South refers to countries in Africa, Latin America, Asia, and Oceania that are typically characterized by lower income levels, less industrialization, and often face numerous socio-economic challenges. These countries have long struggled with issues such as poverty, inequality, and lack of infrastructure, which are exacerbated by global challenges like climate change, pandemics, and economic instability. India’s own journey from a colonized nation to an emerging global power gives it a unique perspective and empathy towards these issues.

Prime Minister Modi highlighted that India’s development model, grounded in democratic values and inclusive growth, serves as a beacon of hope for many countries in the Global South. He pointed out that India’s initiatives in areas such as renewable energy, digital infrastructure, and healthcare can offer scalable solutions to similar challenges faced by other developing nations. Modi underscored the importance of international cooperation, noting that global problems require global solutions, and it is imperative that the voices of the marginalized and underrepresented are heard in global forums like the G7.

The Prime Minister also spoke about India’s efforts to foster South-South cooperation, which involves sharing knowledge, skills, and resources among developing countries to achieve common goals. He cited examples of India’s assistance in capacity-building programs, technology transfer, and humanitarian aid, which have benefitted several nations in Africa and Southeast Asia. Modi’s assertion at the summit was backed by India’s active participation in multilateral organizations such as the United Nations, BRICS, and the Commonwealth, where it consistently advocates for the interests of the Global South.

During his address, Modi called for more equitable financial support and technological access for developing countries to tackle pressing issues like climate change. He stressed that developed nations should take a greater responsibility in mitigating climate impacts, given their historical contribution to environmental degradation. In this context, India’s leadership in the International Solar Alliance was highlighted as a pivotal initiative aimed at promoting sustainable energy solutions.

The Prime Minister’s remarks at the G7 Summit resonate with India’s foreign policy vision of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ – the world is one family. By championing the cause of the Global South, India is not only aiming to uplift its fellow developing nations but also striving to create a more balanced and just global order.
