Delhi HC Orders Sunita Kejriwal to Remove Court Hearing Recording in Excise Policy Case from Social Media

The Times of India

The Delhi High Court has directed Sunita Kejriwal, the wife of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, to take down the recording of a court hearing in the excise policy case from social media platforms. The order came after the court took note of the fact that the recording was being circulated on various social media platforms, including Twitter and WhatsApp.

The case pertains to a petition filed by the Delhi Liquor Wholesale Association challenging the new excise policy introduced by the Delhi government. The association has argued that the new policy, which allows private players to open liquor vends in the national capital, is against the interests of small traders and will lead to a monopoly by big players in the industry.

During the hearing, a video recording of the court proceedings was reportedly made by an unknown person and later uploaded on social media platforms. The court took a serious view of this and directed Sunita Kejriwal, who is a party in the case as she holds a public office, to take down the recording from all social media platforms.

The court observed that the recording of court proceedings and making them public without authorization is a violation of the law and can amount to contempt of court. The bench also expressed concern over the potential misuse of such recordings and their impact on the administration of justice.

The court’s directive to Sunita Kejriwal comes as a reminder of the importance of upholding the sanctity of court proceedings and respecting the authority of the judiciary. It also highlights the need for strict regulations and enforcement mechanisms to prevent the unauthorized recording and dissemination of court hearings.

The case has garnered significant attention due to its implications for the liquor industry in Delhi and the ongoing legal battle between the government and the liquor association. The court’s directive to take down the recording from social media platforms serves as a warning to all parties involved in the case to adhere to the legal and ethical standards governing the conduct of court proceedings.
